This is Benjamin Button, the baby born 80 years old. What a concept! I loved it and was so grateful to have been given the challenge of designing and sculpting how such a concept would look. So basically, I had to think how Brad Pitt, who played Benjamin in the movie, would look as not only a baby but an 80 year old newborn. The director of the film, David Fincher, really impressed me with his astute direction. For instance, in the beginning it consisted of only “give him Shar-Pei dog-like wrinkles.” Fantastic. It was concise yet totally defined where I needed to go. From there, his guidance continued to be spot on and, at the same time, he gave me the freedom to work it out. This kind of sculpture, which is a design too, takes time. I was given it, and turned out to be a very creatively rewarding and challenging experience.
Last July, It was revealed through the Hollywood grapevine that acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro was attempting to get H.P. Lovecraft’s novella AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS translated to the big screen. I was so excited I did these digital design/visualizations in an attempt to get on board. I eventually did contribute and it was an honor.
I need to clarify: These images are my own designs and were completed before my involvement with Mr. Del Toro.
This series was created out of my repulsion to the outcome of the 2004 Presidential election.
